Charles Martley
North Fayston, Vermont
First PMC: 1990
Some of Charles Martley's patients pay him in firewood. Others
with maple syrup. Still others by working on his bike. "This
is Vermont," says acupuncturist. "Life can be difficult for
some people." Martley began studying eastern philosophy and
religion in ninth grade when the head of his high school English
department introduced him to the Bhagavad Gita, the sacred
Hindu text. A Vermonter since 1976, Martley is also director
of a free hospital in Ananda Nagar, India, where he travels
twice a year. He also volunteers for six twelve-hour shirts
as an emergency medical technician each month. "Half of your
energy should go into doing for others," says Martley, who
practices yoga and meditation with his wife Patti and their
four-year-old son Asher. "The other half should go into keeping
you healthy and strong enough so you can continue with the
first half."
"The spiritual level we can reach when we realize it's not
just about us."
