Matt Dustin
Freemont, New Hampshire
First PMC: 1995
Matt Dustin lives on the land and off the land. The veteran
farmer grows fruits and vegetables, raises poultry (including
close to 200 turkeys for the annual Thanksgiving Day feast),
and tends to the whims of the farm's finicky machinery and
motors. He and his wife Amanda have fresh eggs each morning,
courtesy of the nine hens that live behind the couple's New
Hampshire cottage. A cross-country skier as well as a biker,
Matt parses the passage of seasons through subtle changes
in plants, light, and in the texture of the winter snow. "One
of my favorite things is going out about one week after you've
planted corn," he says. "You can look down the row and see
a whole line of green spikes, just one inch high, a row of
life starting all over again. I've seen it a lot, but I still
get the same feeling every time."
"You should only buy what you need."
