Paula Ferrara
Mansfield, Massachusetts
First PMC: 1991
Paula Ferrara's Mansfield childhood was a bounty of family,
friends, and solid, small-town values. She was particularly
close to her Italian-American grandparents: Nonny, who taught
dance at the studio she founded in 1939; and Nonny, who cut
hair at the town salon, and who built his wife's studio in
the basement of the couple's home. "Being the first grandchild,
I think I inherited both their passions," says Paula, who
spent much of her childhood learning to dance- along with
her many cousins- under the watchful eye of her grandmother,
her mother, and her aunt. A former gymnast, cheerleader, and
baritone horn in the Mansfield High marching band, Paula found
her niche as a hairdresser soon after graduation. "I like
being in a profession where you climb your own ladder," she
says, "where your success depends totally on you."
"When women trust you with the outside of their heads, they'll
generally let you inside as well."
