Karen Axelrod
Newton, Massachusetts
First PMC: 1992
Karen Axelrod and husband Bruce Brumberg have two young children,
but their first baby was, "Watch It Made in the USA," a book
they wrote and published together in 1994. Now in its third
edition, the book profiles tours of factories and other sites,
including the New England Carousel Museum in Bristol, Connecticut.
"We actually gave symbolic birth to it at the Brigham and
Women's Hospital, and then told them we'd be coming back soon.
True to her word, Axelrod returned to the hospital seven months
later to deliver daughter Hilary, and three and a half years
after that to bring son Gregory into the world. For Axelrod,
"Watch It Made in the USA" was born of a lifelong interest
in seeing how the things in her household were manufactured.
"We take so many things for granted," she says, "whether it's
the breakfast cereal, or the way the key fits into the ignition
of your car."
"I was curious how the toothpaste got into the tube."
